Additional Made in Japan Information

We never expected a live album from Deep Forest, the two French keyboardists (Eric Monquet and Michel Sanchez) whose stylishly peculiar music (ambient meets dance meets Pygmy vocalese) is a laboratory-like concoction of clever sampling, synthesizers, and studio savvy. Sanchez, in fact, confesses to stage fright. Yet here we find the two lads on a Tokyo stage in 1998, accompanied by four musicians and three singers, breathing life--at times, even fire--into their digitally spliced global village. It's a different sound for the group, and mostly an invigorating one. The real-time human element permeating Made in Japan infuses DF's carefully crafted atmospheres with an energizing vitality and sense of spontaneity. Any absence of studio sophistication in Deep Forest's live sound is compensated for by the music's celebratory mood and the concert's interactive, transcultural, communal environment. This serves to reinforce an ongoing subtext in Deep Forest's aesthetic--the desire to draw a musical thread through the mystical pursuits of far-flung cultures. Highlights: the beguiling grooves of "Bohemian Ballet," the mysterious propulsion of "Café Europa," and the groove-fueled choir that drives "Forest Power." --Terry Wood

What Customers Say About Made in Japan:

I keep buying copies to give away as gifts, and always have a couple spare. They have selected their best compositions to include here, and in my judgement have improved every one. World "electronica" mixed with passion, humor, and fantastic musicianship.

As just ONE example, "Baba" from Boheme: I can hardly listen to it; the singers sound drunk or about to croak, and the "electronic effects" make the chorus sound like they are down in different wells. Where the crowd can be heard, if anything they help you appreciate the performances here. The Made in Japan version of this song is so different.and so wonderful.

Interested in Deep Forest. The studio albums do not have the energy, soul, or beauty of these performances. For those listeners who are not tied to a version they've heard a dozen times, you find that Deep Forest's music "live" is very melodic, catchy yet driving; it can really stand on its own without the (for some) beloved studio effects.

You CANNOT GO WRONG with this CD. For a live performance, the quality of the sound is really great, and I disagree with negative reviews, including the most popular one on here.

If you love world music, this would make a nice addition to your collection. "Deep Forest" can at times melt cultures into a musical paradise, which gives this a high multicultural appeal. ~The Rebecca Review Deep Forest has tribal textures with soothing melodious moments and earthy comfort. This music feels like a home for your soul.

Very well recorded with some brilliant performances all around. That there are songs from other Deep Forest albums here should not come as a big surprise. The vocal performances are breathtaking. The song arrangements are done well and it turns out that the music lends itself particularly well to live performances.

Anyhow, this my personal favorite from Deep Forest. The surprising part is how much energy is infused into their music as the result of performing live. There is plenty of applause and shouting as there should be - one of the best parts about live performances is hearing the crowd's reaction to the music as it is taking place. The studio stuff is brilliant, but sounds quantized next to this album with its live vocalists and the band grooving to a smoking kit drummmer. That's why we have audience mics running into the board. I did not know what to expect initially, since the DF sound seems to be primarily sample based, sequenced and synthetic.

It's some big noise. Enjoy and bear in mind that it hasn't been all that long that human beings have been able to go back and listen to a performance that occurred in the past. Also, it never hurts to have a terrific kit drummer on hand. Apparently, there are people who do not understand that bands do tend to perform live at times - and when they do, they generally perform songs in their personal repertoire.

Oh well. Wish I had paid more attention to the list of songs before I bought it. I was very disappointed with this album. Over half of the songs are repeats from the Boheme album.

The musicianship is absolutely incredible. In fact I like the live version alot more with the beats sounding a bit more original. Green & Blue in it's parent album sounds good but the live version on Made In Japan sounds absolutely incredible. Forest Power is just plain breathtaking with fusions of rock, world, pop, jazz, funk and New Age all melted together. While the original version has a sort of danceable beat the live version on this CD to me is better. I'm not too much into live albums.

Many of the songs on here while they sound good on their parent albums sound greatly improved especially those from the Comparsa albums. The more complex sound of Sweet Lullaby magnifies that tracks power. In general, I am more into the studio recorded albums than I am into live albums and I hate the redundant clapping and shouting but Made In Japan is a HUGE exception. It's great to hear their older songs given different drum loops with Sweet Lullaby being the prime example. While I don't really recommend live albums that much Made In Japan however I have to say is a must have. They actually improved the songs.

I especially love the live versions of Deep Weather, The Hunter and their internation smash hit Sweet Lullaby.
